Can I do One?
Apprenticeships are open to everyone living in England.
The simple answer is - Yes! Apprenticeships are open to everyone living in England, who is not currently in full time education. But you do need to consider the following:
Because Apprenticeships aren't just based on academic achievement entry requirements are flexible. But some academic skills are essential, especially in English and mathematics and you may need to take a selection test. Practical skills also count, as does your interest in the area of work you’ve chosen. Employers value keenness to work and learn.
You will need to find an employer willing to sponsor you through your Apprenticeship. Try contacting companies direct to get some work experience to see first hand what the job would entail. Work experience is always valuable when applying for an Apprenticeship and can improve your chances of being successful, as well as giving you the opportunity to find out more about the area of work you’re interested in.
An Apprenticeship is not the easy option, there is an element of commitment expected from you. You will have to be prepared to give two or three years of training and further study, depending on what Apprenticeship you decide to do.
To get a sought after Apprenticeship place, you’ll have to show you are committed, and aware of your responsibilities to both yourself and the company who would employ you. You also need to be happy to work as both part of a team and individually, and be able to use your own initiative.
As with any job you will have to show enthusiasm, a level of dedication and have a professional attitude. Your working hours will be agreed with your employer, as will your wage and how this will increase as you progress through your Apprenticeship.
As you will be working towards a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) at Level 2 or 3, you will need to manage the course work this will require. You will also spend time at our training centres (usually one day a week) to work towards your technical certificate, Key Skills and other relevant qualifications, and to acquire the knowledge and skills you will apply in the work-place. You must be committed to this off the job learning element of your Apprenticeship to succeed. If you don’t, you will lose your place on the course and your Apprenticeship. The amount of time you'll spend studying varies. But it will be between 750 and 1,000 hours over the course of your Apprenticeship, some of it at home.
