Courses for Adults

Prospects for qualified trades people are excellent throughout the country due to the demand for skilled staff

The UK needs skilled workers. So if you’re thinking of retraining to become an electrician, a plumber or gas fitter your chances of getting regular work and having a career for life are very good indeed. You will be able to choose between working for a contracting firm, becoming self-employed – or both!

The press is full of stories that eastern-European immigrant workers are returning to their home countries, further boosting the number of skilled trades people needed to address the existing skills shortage.

In the coming years it is also expected there will be a substantial demand from domestic householders for cheaper ways to light and heat their homes with more energy efficient and environmentally friendly systems. Plumbers, electricians and gas engineers will be at the forefront of installing and maintaining these systems.

As an adult you have a number of avenues open to you for training, however it is essential that you follow a properly prescribed course. One that contains all the knowledge and skills you need to do the job properly and safely and which includes all the lawful qualifications too. All the courses offered by ATL meet this requirement. For information on what the industry and the law requires have a look at the section of this website for your chosen trade

Careers in Construction

Adult Apprenticeship
An Apprenticeship is the traditional way to train and enter the industry. Although Apprenticeships have historically been aimed at young people there are no legal restrictions based on age that prevent you from taking part in an apprenticeship scheme. Apprenticeship schemes exist to support people who choose to train for entry into practical careers by paying for your training as an incentive for employers to take on apprentices. However adults sometimes find it difficult to get an apprenticeship as employers often prefer to take on younger people. But if you have an employer willing to take you on and you can afford to support yourself on the wages offered by the employer while you train let us know and subject to meeting the entry requirements you can join one of the college’s apprenticeship programmes.

Career Course
The alternative to an Adult Apprenticeship is one of the college’s careers courses which you can study on either a full-time, part-time or a blended learning basis. A blended learning course is a mix of home study and occasional attendance at the college for practical tuition under the watchful eye and guidance of a qualified tutor. These courses are particularly suitable if you want to continue working in your current job while you retrain.

The cost of retaining need not be a barrier either. The college offers a variety of funding options to adults wanting to retain. Some of these options include state assistance, deferred loans and interest free pay-as-you-learn schemes. Once you have chosen your preferred course contact the college for more information.
