Regulatory Requirements
You should be familiar with the building regulations and ensure you hold the appropriate certificates of competence so you work lawfully.
If you’re a building services engineer then it’s a good bet that much of your work is governed by Building Regulations. Building Regulations exist to ensure the health and safety of people in and around buildings, and the energy efficiency of buildings. They are a set of requirements laid down by Parliament to ensure that building work is carried out to approved standards and apply to most new buildings and many alterations to existing buildings.
Competent person schemes were introduced by the Government to allow trades people to self-certify that their work complies with the Building Regulations as an alternative to submitting a building notice or using an approved inspector. The principles of self-certification are based on giving people who are competent in their field the ability to self-certify that their work complies with the Building Regulations without the need to submit a building notice and thus incur local authority inspections or fees.
