Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999

An explanation of the lawful requirements affecting individuals working on water systems and fittings in premises that are, or will be, connected to the public water supply and leading to the certification needed to attain Approved Contractor status

Description

The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 were introduced to prevent the waste, misuse, undue consumption, contamination or erroneous measurement of drinking water. The Regulations are enforced by the Water Companies, which means that unless you are an Approved Contractor you must obtain the prior consent of your water company before carrying out any work on water systems and fittings in premises that are, or will be, connected to the public water supply.

Who it’s for

Practicing plumbers and heating & ventilation engineers with some knowledge of hot and cold water systems who want to attain Approved Contractor status so they don’t need to obtain the prior consent of a water company before carrying out work. The course is also useful to Water Inspectors and anyone else involved in the installation, design or specification of water systems, or with buildings containing water systems.

Entry Requirements

None. Previous knowledge of the regulations is not assumed, however a fundamental knowledge of plumbing systems is assumed.

Duration

1 days training and assessment, preceded by 13 hours self-study before attendance (see Supporting publications). 

Outcomes

Upon successful completion candidates will receive the BPEC/Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS) Certificate and will be able to apply to the Water Authority for approved contractor status.

Supporting publications

In preparation for the course candidates will receive a 13 hour self-study pack and instructional DVD. Candidates should bring this with them for use during the training and assessment.

Domestic arrangements

Candidates will be provided with a light lunch and refreshments on each day of attendance.

Regulatory requirement?

No. However, compliance with the Water Regulations is and contractors cannot self-certify their work without first gaining Approved Contractor status.
